THE CHARCOALS - 21 years of Golden Oldies (Burnt Out Woods) And so it began! A Charcoal Odyssey of Fun, Friendship and FraternityThe Phoenix, a mythical bird, said to live to an age of 500/600 years would burn itself on a funeral nest of herbs and rise again from the ashes, fresh and beautiful for another long life!
So too have the "Burnt Out Woods" risen from the ashes as the fresh, energetic, handsome Eastwood Charcoals to promote fun, friendship, fraternity of Golden Oldies rugby.
In the early 70's Geoff Harvey established the Old Frothonians for those 70 to put their boots on for another run, so the Eastwood Charcoals were assured of an exciting future. When the old Froth's stalwarts, the Taylor brothers - Richard, Barry and Ken - Ross Latham, Rex Leavy, Gunna Hay, John Spooner, Dave Jackson, Prince Kaa, Ken Smallwood and Rocky, assembled with another 40 players, yes, to put their boots on for another run.
The Froth's established great playing ethics with exciting games against the Randwick Oldgolds, Armenians, Old Farts and Ali's Bedouines. We will never forget the Champagne served by scantily dressed females and waiters in tuxedos alighting from a Rolls Royce on T.G. Millner Field. Even a try was scored by Harvey on a Honda Motor Cycle and these types of games, undisbursed with serious rugby, enabled Eastwood Rugby Club to form a team for the 1983 International Festival held in Sydney.
The new team was called the "Charcoals" made up of Eastwood Rugby players over the age of 35 and at that age most grade players were considered burnt out, hence the Charcoals. |
